Fly Southwest: BOI to Reno, Nevada

Southwest Airlines, the paradigm of jet set commerce, has transformed the way we see air travel...or at least the way we understand the term "Baggage Allowance". Once upon a time, a caring mother could pack a coziest quilt and fourteen types of homemade snacks for her precious son's flight. But now, such maternal extravagance warrants an extra $50. Yet, Southwest lures its unsuspecting victims with the promise of two free checked bags. Of course, they fail to specify how many personal belongings can fit in a bag that is only 50 lbs. Is it just the miniature fan, or can I include the yoga mat as well? Why force us to learn the intricate art of minimalistic packing when we are too engrossed in the adrenaline rush of hopping from Boise to Reno?

Traveling in any 'Economy Class' seat that does not give you the privilege of breaking your own legs with a reclining seat or being awoken by an attendant more focused on her duty of offering a beverage every 5 minutes, is a lesson in endurance. Southwest Airlines’ idea of "generous legroom" is an unfailingly laughable hypothesis to any passenger over 5'9”. They seem to designate spaces based on the average height from the dark ages, conveniently ignoring that the human race has evolved since then.

Remember the excitement of Flight Deals? A good deal could make you feel like royalty. Well, Southwest, the noble oppressor, has its own unique interpretation of a ‘great deal’. Booking a One-way ticket, only to find that the supposed discount is actually only applicable to a Round-trip booking. A classic bait and switch! Quite ingenious when you think about it, a spicy deal on the surface, but unveiling the truth beneath can make even the most ardent deal hunter cringe.

Oh, and we cannot fail to acknowledge the Southwest Frequent Flyer scheme, the Rapid Rewards program. Seen through the eyes of satire, this becomes a bustling mirage of joys. It's fascinating to see how miles travelled turn magically into points. But what exactly do these points redeem? Perhaps a coveted snack on board? Alas! These points are only 'rewarding' when used against future flights. The sheer subtlety of encouraging more air travel to reward frequent flying is, without a shred of doubt, an applaudable marketing strategy.

Talking about being on board, let’s cast a glance at the In-flight Services. All hail the complimentary ‘beverages and snacks’. Of course, there is no elaboration on what sort of 'beverages' ( Hot water? Cold water?) or 'snacks' (A stick of celery? A lone peanut?) that might be. It seems like even on board, our gastronomic preference is secondary to the airline's economic advantage.

Moving on to the Flight Duration, the true beauty of traveling through the sky. For Southwest, flying from Boise to Reno seems to be a thrilling adventure, meticulously planned to ensure we endure every grandeur of the sky, shades of cloud, and vivid patches of land, for an 'estimated' two hours. One could argue that the 'estimation' varies as much as the turbulence does.

To conclude, while you may find yourself amused, bewildered, or even outraged at some of these idiosyncrasies, it is important to remember that Southwest Airlines still offers one of the cheapest ways to get from Boise to Reno. Even if that journey involves stowing your beloved homemade snacks in a 50 lb bag.
