Fly Southwest: MDW to Fort Lauderdale, Florida

It was an ordinary Wednesday in April when I found myself on a mission of utmost importance... plotting my great escape from the Windy City (Chicago, to the uninitiated) all the way down to sunny Fort Lauderdale. The intent was clear - escape the piercing chill, replace layers of wardrobe with a single pair of shorts, and most of all, soak up some vitamin sunshine! My weapon of choice - the mighty Southwest Airlines. Destined to whisk me away to the tropics, Southwest promised a journey as captivating as the destination itself.

As I embarked on this vastly important mission, the first order of business was, of course, airfare. Now, navigating the labyrinth of flight deals is much akin to deciphering the hieroglyphs in the Pyramid of Giza. However, my hidden talent is in understanding the cryptic language of cheap flights, and Southwest did have several ace cards up its wing.

With an array of options, the great dispute of 'Direct flights vs. Connecting flights' crept into my mind. A matter as puzzling as the question – to be or not to be. Direct flights, the suave and swift jet-setters, charming with their promise of non-stop indulgence. While connecting flights, the persuasive charlatans, seducing the cost-conscious with engaging layover narratives. But alas, the desire for a smooth hassle-free journey won over. So, direct flights, it was!

Baggage allowance! Ah, the eternal struggle of the modern airborne nomad. As I stared at my hefty suitcase, my mind wandered to the merciless baggage policies we often find ourselves entrapped in. But, to great surprise and utter delight, I discovered that Southwest Airlines, with its saintly grace, allows not one, but two bags free of cost! Sightings of such generosity are as rare as unicorns in the airline kingdom, I must say.

Considering the nature of my one-way journey, I thought it prudent to study Southwest’s flight cancellation policy. And let me tell you, it was written in terms more comforting than a Shakespearean sonnet! It whispered of no cancellation fees, refunds, and... prepare yourself... even credit for future flights! In these uncertain times, such hospitality gives one a glimmer of hope, akin to finding an oasis in a desert.

Naturally, I was slightly wary about the flight duration given that prolonged confinement post the pandemic can induce a unique brand of cabin fever. But Southwest, in true knight-in-shining-armor-style, advertised their in-flight services like a magical concoction of entertainment and comfort designed to transport cabin-dwelling peasants into the throes of first-class euphoria. If that wasn't enough to convince the dubious traveler, their solid airline reviews would surely provide the required reassurance.

In all my escapades (and there have been numerous), rarely have I seen an airline with such personality, such joie de vivre. If it was a person, it’d be that charismatic friend we all have – the one who lights up the room, effortlessly helps you navigate party politics, and leaves you with a warm fuzzy feeling. My friends, if Indiana Jones taught us anything, it is that getting there should be half the adventure. So, to those preparing for a journey of their own, remember – not all airlines wear a cape, but Southwest certainly does. Bon, voyage!
